Employment Prospects

Can foreign students work in China?

Foreigners are not allowed to just work under the X-visa. Fortunately, they can take part-time jobs and internships off campus later on. If you have an X1 visa, you can apply for a temporary residence permit within 30 days of setting foot in China. Traditionally, international students have been unable to work in China during their studies, and foreign citizens have been unable to get a visa to work in China without at least two years of post-study work experience overseas, making it near impossible for international students to transition to a working visa.

A survey of international students at Peking University in 2009 found that 82.7 per cent came to China to study because they wanted a career related to China. A job fair for international students held last year by the Ministry of Education found that 95 per cent of them wanted a job in China.

Skill Shortages

China faces an acute shortage of skilled workers in the areas of finance, IT and green fields. Mr. Simon Lance, Regional Director, China, in a leading recruiting company says, “We are operating in 31 countries, and these are the skills that our global clients are constantly demanding. Anyone looking to find a place in the global economy needs to focus and develop these skill sets.” Being a world leader in economic and technological spheres, China offers a plethora of lucrative opportunities.
