Culture

The USA has the world’s largest international student population, with nearly 600,000 students choosing to broaden their education and life experience in the United States. American culture has been enriched by the values and belief systems of virtually every part of the world. As you may know, one of the hallmarks of U.S. culture is independence. Here is some advice about written by non-U.S. students just like you! In order to make friends, you must take the initiative to meet people. Because of the American value of independence, Americans will not always be looking out for you, or making sure that you are getting acquainted with other people.



Food

Safety

While a generally safe country for tourists, some areas of some cities are best avoided.  The US is the 51th safest country in the world, based on the safest and most dangerous countries ranking. While it is true that many US cities are quite unsafe compared to their international counterparts, as an international student there are very less odds of you becoming a victim of a serious crime.



Health

The quality of medical care available in the United States is generally of a high standard. In the United States, health care is provided by private hospitals and clinics.  Increasingly, due to rising costs, employees are required to help cover the cost of medical insurance.

Transport 

Transportation in the United States is facilitated by road, air, rail, and waterways (via boats). The vast majority of passenger travel occurs by automobile for shorter distances, and airplane (or railroad for some people) for longer distances. The subway and busses cost $2.00 a ride and you are allowed a free transfer from subway to bus or from bus to bus within three hours. If you are only using mass transit to go to and from work it would cost $20 per month $2.00 each way 5 days a week. The city offers special daily and weekly metro cards.
